About apartments on the Garden Route

Apartments on the Garden Route, Western Cape

Apartments are what the Garden Route mostly is. We list 580 of them — more than double every other self-catering format on this site put together — and four towns do most of the work: Mossel Bay 158, Plettenberg Bay 114, Knysna 110 and George 108, which between them is roughly 84% of the total. The rest fills in behind: Sedgefield 32, Wilderness 30, Great Brak River 15 and Hartenbos 13. If you're comparing Garden Route holiday apartments across towns, this is the whole picture in one list rather than eight separate ones.

What you get is consistent. A private kitchen — hob, fridge, microwave, kettle, crockery at minimum — a lounge, one or two bedrooms, bedding and towels, and parking. Most sleep two to four, though 109 of these apartments take six or more, so a family isn't automatically pushed into a whole house. Shared pools are more common than private ones. The trade-off against a holiday home is space and privacy; the trade-off in your favour is price, and on this coast that gap is wide enough that an apartment week and a house week are genuinely different budgets.

Town changes the character more than the spec does. Mossel Bay has the most stock and the best square-meterage per rand, stepping up the hill from Santos Beach. Plett's apartments are the beach-holiday ones, around Central Beach and along Beachy Head Drive, and they price like it in December. Knysna's are the most walkable — the Waterfront cluster puts restaurants, the ferry quay and a supermarket within five minutes on foot. George's are the largest on average and the handiest for the airport and the golf. Wilderness, Sedgefield, Hartenbos and Great Brak River are the quiet ones, and in the off-season some of the cheapest beachfront self-catering on the coast.

Practical questions

Apartments on the Garden Route — the questions worth answering

Which Garden Route town has the most self-catering apartments?
Mossel Bay, with 158 of the apartments on this page — more than any other town we cover, and mostly stepping up the hill behind Santos Beach with bay views. Plettenberg Bay (114), Knysna (110) and George (108) follow closely, so all four give you real choice.
Are these apartments fully self-catering?
Yes. Every apartment listed here has a working kitchen — at minimum a hob, fridge, microwave, kettle and basic crockery and cutlery. Most add an oven and a toaster, many a washing machine. Bedding and towels are provided. You bring or buy the groceries.
Can an apartment work for a family of six?
Often, yes — 109 of the apartments on this page sleep six or more, so you do not have to jump straight to a whole house. Use the guest filter above to see only those, and check the individual listing for how the beds are actually configured before you book.
