About Mossel Bay, Garden Route

This busy Garden Route town is a popular tourist destination and one of South Africa's harbors. It is situated against the blue-black background of the Outeniqua Mountains on the sun-drenched slopes of Cape St Blaize, facing the vast sea. Upscale hotels, pleasant B&Bs, holiday homes, and luxurious villas with spectacular views are all available in Mossel Bay.

Mossel Bay is located midway between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town on the Garden Route, near Oudtshoorn,  Swellendam, Plettenberg Bay, and Knysna. It is known for the Mossgas project, which involves mining offshore gas reserves for gas that is subsequently turned into petroleum.

Despite its apparent industrial bent, Mossel Bay has a long history of leisurely friendliness, and the town and its environs have enough natural beauty to make a stay necessary. According to the Guinness Book of Records, Mossel Bay has the second-mildest all-year climate in the world, second only to Hawaii. When you add in the long length of beaches, the warm seas of the Indian Ocean, and one or two championship golf courses, Mossel Bay becomes a perfect summer and winter getaway.

History of Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay has a rich history, and there are many ancient buildings worth seeing, including approximately 200 stone dwellings constructed by Cornish stonemasons a century ago. Although Mossel Bay was ‘discovered' as early as 1488, when Dias first met the ancient Khoi-San people upon walking ashore, she got her current name in 1601 when Dutch explorer Paulus van Caerden discovered a hoard of mussel shells in a cave near the tip of Cape St Blaize.

Mossel Bay is still known for its oysters and mussels, and it is also home to some of the world's biggest tuna and black marlin harvests. Tunnel Cave is a 60-meter tunnel that runs through the peninsula of Cape St Blaize and exits on a stretch of untamed shoreline known for its diverse collection of seashells.

The first Postal Service in South Africa was established at Mossel Bay in 1500 when Pedro de Ataide hid a message in a shoe under a milkwood tree. The historic Post Office is now a national monument, where mail is continuously sorted.

Along with Jeffreys Bay and Port Elizabeth, Mossel Bay is a popular surfing destination, with Outer Pool being the most well-known wave. Dolphin and whale watching, as well as snorkeling, are prevalent water activities.

Mossel Bay is a pleasant and interesting stop and has some the best accommodation on the Garden Route. Its broad beaches allow safe swimming and the magnificent bluffs of Cape St Blaize's southern shoreline, with the beautiful Outeniqua Mountain ranges in the backdrop.
