About George, Garden Route

George is located in a lush, wealthy valley bordered by the Outeniqua Mountains, woods, rivers, and thriving farmlands and is just 420 kilometers from Cape Town and 320 kilometers from Port Elizabeth, rendering it an ideal stopover for exploring the Garden Route.

George, the municipal center of the South Cape, is a large city with well-developed infrastructure. It has transformed from an industrial town to a major tourist destination, which is easy to accomplish when you have two of South Africa's top ten golf courses, theatres, a vast stretch of woodland, rivers, as well as the Indian Ocean on your doorstep.

History Of George

If history is to be accepted, this lovely corner of the globe was only discovered in 1688, long after Dias had arrived at Mossel Bay in 1488 in search of food and drinkable water. Outeniqualand – the 'land of milk and honey – was the name given to this lush and verdant paradise by the Khoi people in this fertile valley. In 1811, a town called George Town was founded here, named after the reigning king of England.

Activities In George

George always has been a laid-back hamlet with a laid-back attitude that enables visitors to appreciate the area's natural beauty. Hiking trails all across George provide spectacular views of the city and the coast, as well as exposure to the region's unique fynbos. The Groene Weide forest treks, which start at Saasveld College near the northern end of one of the golf courses and the George Peak and Cradock's Peak treks, are challenging but worthwhile for the pure beauty of the vistas, are among them.

George is affectionately referred to as “cold and wet” because of their CAW vehicle registration. Angling, hang paragliding, snorkeling, windsurfing, biking, kayaking, camping, yachting, kitesurfing, and surfing are just a few of the outdoor sports available in George all year.
