The stock is newer and flatter than Mossel Bay's Point, largely two- and three-bedroom units in small low-rise blocks, and a good share of it is either on the beachfront road or one street back from it. Because the town was laid out for family holidays rather than couples' weekends, the units run bigger than the apartment average elsewhere on the Garden Route — more sleeping space, more parking, and a braai on the balcony as standard rather than a bonus.

The trade-off is seasonality. Hartenbos is a holiday town in the strictest sense: it fills to several times its resident population over December and January, then empties. In the off-season the same apartments are among the cheapest beachfront self-catering on the coast, and Mossel Bay's unusually mild, dry winter means the beach is still usable.
