What cookies we use
We try to run lean. The cookies involved in a visit to this site fall into four groups:
Essential
First-party cookies and local storage that make the site work — remembering your filter selections on a town page, your cookie consent choice, and similar interface state. These don't track you, don't need consent under POPIA, and can't be switched off without breaking the site.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate visitor behaviour — which pages people read, how they arrived, which towns interest them. The data is statistical, not personal. These cookies are blocked by default and only load after you consent.
Affiliate attribution
When you click a "Check rates on Booking.com" link, you're briefly redirected through Commission Junction (kqzyfj.com). CJ sets a cookie so that if you then make a booking, it can be attributed to us. Without it we'd get nothing — with it, the price you pay is unchanged. These cookies only fire if you actively click through, so they're effectively opt-in by action.
Advertising (Google AdSense)
If AdSense is enabled on the site, it can set personalisation cookies via doubleclick.net to show relevant ads. These are blocked by default and only load after you consent.
How we manage consent
Consent is handled through Cookiebot (when fully wired up). Until then, we default to the privacy-friendly setup: analytics and advertising cookies don't load unless you opt in, and affiliate cookies only fire when you actively click a Booking.com link. Essential cookies are always on.
Your choices
You can clear cookies at any time using your browser settings — every major browser has this under Privacy or Site Data. If you only want to opt out of Google Analytics across every site that uses it, Google provides an official Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
