Self-catering in Hartenbos, Western Cape

Hartenbos is a purpose-built holiday town, and it has never pretended otherwise. It sits on the coast about seven kilometres around the bay from Mossel Bay, and almost everything in it exists to serve a family on a beach holiday: a long open beach, a river mouth with paddle boats, caravan parks, a water slide, and street after street of self-catering apartments and holiday homes that fill up in December and go quiet again in February.

The town's character comes from its history. The South African Railways and Harbours turned Hartenbos into a holiday resort for its lower-ranking employees in 1933, and the ATKV bought the farm in 1936 and developed it from there. That inheritance is still the town — it remains an Afrikaans holiday heartland, and the caravan parks are, as residents put it, the soul of the place. It is not polished, and that is precisely the appeal.

Self-catering here is generally newer, flatter and better value than the equivalent on the Point in Mossel Bay. A lot of the stock is beachfront or near-beachfront apartments in small blocks, plus free-standing holiday homes a street or two back. Because the town was built for families rather than couples, you get more space, more parking and more braai facilities per rand than almost anywhere else on the Garden Route.

The seasonal swing is extreme. Hartenbos has a permanent population in the low thousands and takes as many as 15,000 visitors at once at the December peak, so book early for the school holidays and expect a genuinely different town in winter — quiet, cheap, and with the same warm, dry Mossel Bay weather that makes this stretch of coast the best cold-season base on the Garden Route.
