There are four game reserves near Mossel Bay that you can realistically get to and back from in a day, and they are not interchangeable. One will put you on a vehicle for three hours for R890. One won't sell you a game drive at all unless you're sleeping there. One is the cheapest way onto a Land Rover on this stretch of coast. And one is the only reserve of the four that tells you plainly it has four of the Big Five rather than five.
I went through each reserve's own website in August 2026 and pulled the rates, the times and the species lists straight from the source. Everything below is quoted from the reserves themselves — where a reserve doesn't publish something, I've said so rather than guessed. There's a side-by-side comparison further down if you'd rather skip to it.
The short answer
If you're staying in Mossel Bay and want one safari, book Botlierskop. It's the closest, it takes day visitors properly, and a three-hour guided drive runs R890 for an adult and R445 for a child at 09:00 or 13:00.
If you want the cheapest way onto a game vehicle, Garden Route Game Lodge at Albertinia does a day safari for R760 an adult, leaving 11:00. If you want a proper lodge night rather than an outing, Gondwana is the one. And if you want somewhere small and very well reviewed, Indalu — with a caveat about its elephants that I'll come to.
Botlierskop: the one to book if you only do one
Botlierskop describes itself as "6,000 hectares of pristine protected wilderness" and sits, in its own words, "midway between Mossel Bay and George": Gonnakraal Road, off the N2 at Little Brak River. It is the biggest of the four and by some distance the most set up for people who aren't staying the night.
The day-visitor rates are published openly, which is more than most reserves manage. For the 2025/26 season a Guided Game Drive of three hours is R890 an adult and R445 a child, departing 09:00 or 13:00. A three-and-a-half-hour sundowner drive is R1,440. Children between three and twelve pay half the adult rate; under-threes have to book a private vehicle. There are also horseback safaris from age seven with a 100 kg rider limit, and a spa.
The elephant story is worth knowing
Botlierskop used to run elephant-back safaris. Its own website is unusually direct about ending them: "In August 2014 Botlierskop made the decision to stop all elephant back safaris following the birth of Thambile." The site now describes "releasing the family of elephants back into the wild in order to have as little as possible human interaction."
Two of its elephants, Shaka and Clyde, arrived in May 2017 from Knysna Elephant Park, the same operation we looked at in our honest guide to Knysna Elephant Park. If the ethics of captive elephants matter to you, that history is worth reading before you book anywhere on this list.
Gondwana: the overnight one
Gondwana is the one that behaves like a classic safari lodge, and it's the only reserve of the four whose own website names all five of the Big Five outright: "lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo." It also lists giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, cheetah, hyena, impala, eland, bontebok and Cape mountain zebra. South African Tourism puts the reserve at 11,000 hectares — that figure comes from SA Tourism rather than Gondwana's own pages, so treat it as their number, not the reserve's.
The catch for day trippers: Gondwana's activities page states that "Early morning and late afternoon Game drives are included in your full board package." There is no published day-visitor game-drive rate. What it does price separately is a Bokkie Drive at R570 an adult and R285 a child, and a guided fynbos bush walk at R860 an adult. If you specifically want a Gondwana game drive without staying over, ring them — don't assume.
The fynbos angle is genuine rather than marketing dressing. The reserve's conservation foundation works on the Cape Floristic Kingdom, which Gondwana describes as "the smallest and most critically endangered of all the floristic kingdoms."
Garden Route Game Lodge: the cheapest drive
At Albertinia, roughly 46 km west of Mossel Bay, this is the furthest out and the cheapest way onto a vehicle. The day safari is R760 an adult, R380 for children six to twelve and R190 for three-to-fives, running 11:00 to 13:30 every day and lasting about two and a half hours with a refreshment stop.
The species list on their site reads "lion, white rhino, giraffe, elephant, buffalo, cheetah and an abundance of antelope and smaller mammal species." Worth noting: the site claims the reserve is "home to an abundance of animal and bird life including the Big 5", but leopard doesn't appear anywhere in the named list. That's a common pattern at Garden Route reserves and it's the sort of thing to ask about at the gate rather than assume.
Because the drive leaves late morning, this is the easy one to build a day around if you're heading west anyway. Lunch afterwards at their restaurant is optional and à la carte.
Indalu: the small one, and the elephant question
Indalu is the smallest of the four and the best rated. It's also the most honest about what it holds: the site says you'll "embark on a game-viewing adventure in open vehicles in search of 4 of the Big 5" — four, not five — and lists "8 different antelope species". It doesn't say which four, so ask. Day visitors are explicitly welcome and both a game drive and a sunset game drive are bookable.
The thing to weigh up is the elephant experience. Indalu offers a "guided walk with our elephants" where you "get to walk and interact with them and feed them". That is a hands-on captive-elephant interaction, not a hands-off sighting from a vehicle — the opposite direction to the one Botlierskop has taken. Plenty of visitors love it and the reviews reflect that. It's simply a decision worth making deliberately rather than discovering at the gate.

Filter by the animal you actually care about seeing. The tags come from each reserve's own species list. Where a reserve doesn't name a species, it isn't tagged, even if it makes a general Big Five claim.

The smallest and the most highly rated of the four on Google, and the only one that is straight with you about what it holds — its own site says four of the Big Five, not five. It still runs a hands-on elephant walk and feed, which is the thing to think hardest about before you book.

What you'll realistically see
Every reserve on this list is malaria-free and fenced, which is what makes a two-hour drive from a Mossel Bay self-catering flat viable at all. It also means the game is managed rather than wild-ranging, and sightings are far more reliable than they'd be in a park the size of Kruger.
Zebra, wildebeest, kudu and the antelope species you will almost certainly see. Elephant, rhino, giraffe and buffalo are likely at the reserves that list them. Lion are usually in a separate managed section. Leopard, despite the Big Five branding, is the one nobody should promise you.
Making a day of it from Mossel Bay
The morning drives at Botlierskop leave at 09:00, which from central Mossel Bay means being on the road by about 08:15. The Garden Route Game Lodge safari leaves at 11:00, so it suits a slower start and a lunch afterwards. Either way you're back in town well before dark.
