About George
George is a town within the Western Cape of South Africa, around the south side of the magnificent Outeniqua Mountains, with about 157,400 residents.
George is situated the sea-coast about 300 km east of Cape Town on the well known Garden Route. George is the economic capital of the Garden Route. Locally, tourist attractions like the broad beaches of Herolds Bay, Victoria Bay and Wilderness, the ostrich town of Oudtshoorn and Knysna featuring its lovely lagoon, have been part of the Garden Route National Park since March 2009 .
The local forests with spectacular old yellowwood trees along with other tree species, the stunning fynbos with dozens of varieties of proteas , ericas and heaths and a large selection of fern varieties catch the attention of vacation goers and holidaymakers who really like the great outdoors and countryside.
George is recognized for its great golf courses (there are actually 3 different 18-hole courses on the Fancourt estate alone) along with the historic Montagu Pass over the Outeniqua Mountain (opened in 1847 ).
