About George

George is a city in the Western Cape of South Africa, about the south side of the stunning Outeniqua Mountains, with about 157,400 residents.

George is situated at the sea-coast about 300 km east of Cape Town on the well-known Garden Route. George is the economic capital of the Garden Route. In the vicinity, landmarks just like the broad beaches of Herolds Bay, Victoria Bay and Wilderness, the ostrich town of Oudtshoorn and Knysna featuring a beautiful lagoon, have been part of the Garden Route National Park since March 2009.

The native forests with beautiful old yellowwood trees and other tree varieties, the beautiful fynbos with many kinds of proteas, ericas and heaths and a large number of fern varieties bring in tourists and holidaymakers who like the great outdoors and scenery.

George is famous for its superb golf courses (there are 3 distinct 18-hole courses on the Fancourt estate alone) and the historic Montagu Pass over the Outeniqua Mountain (opened in 1847 ).
