About

The Knysna Elephant Park was the first institution in South Africa to be established in 1994 with the purpose of providing housing and medical treatment for orphaned African elephants.

Over the course of the last two decades, the park has been responsible for the care and upbringing of more than 40 elephants. These animals include those who have been moved to new homes, those that have lost their parents, and elephants that have been saved from being killed. In some cases, the animals have stayed with the herd, while in others, they have been relocated to various reserves and sites throughout the Eastern and Western Cape.

There are now eight members in the KEP herd, making it the most populous matriarchal domesticated herd in the nation. Because of the way they run the attraction, visitors have the chance to interact with the elephants on their own terms, which means they may get quite near to them.

Guests are able to absorb the breathtaking presence of these creatures via responsible and informative encounters, but the elephants are still given the freedom and space to select where they want to roam, whatever they want to eat, and who they want to engage with. The habitat promotes elephants to display natural behaviors, and there are no barriers to get in the way of the up-close encounters we have with them.
